Jesus VS. Christians (Again...)

This past weekend we began our One Prayer series and my prayer for The Orchard and for the church at large was, "Make Us Irreplaceable." 

As a part of my talk, I showed this video that we originally created and used in early 2007.  The video is straightforward, bothersome, and quite revealing as it illustrates a huge gap between how people view Jesus and how they view the people who are supposed to be representing him.

(And just so you know, the video was not edited to make a point.  In the 45 minutes of interviews, we did not receive ONE positive comment for the second half of the video.)

           

Pickles..........on Pizza?

Ok, so Des Moines is known for pork tenderloin sandwiches and........Bacon Cheeseburger pizza? 

Hmmm...  Check this out:

Ground beef, onions, instead of red pizza sauce - a mix of ketchup and mustard (no lie!), cheese, bacon (somewhere on there...), and then get this...............topped with PICKLE slices! 

Believe it or not it was pretty good!  But only for a couple of slices...  I was done after that.  Too salty and mustard-y. 

Next time I'll have to try the spam and asparagus pizza. 

Or maybe the lemon pepper chicken.

Or perhaps the chili-dog. 

For real.  They have all of those.

But HONEY LATTE?  C'mon...

This is exactly what went through my head five minutes ago when someone approached my table here at Starbucks to offer me a sample of their newest drink - a honey latte.

So here I am sipping it...........

Sip #1: "Hmmm.....not very good." 

Sip #2: "Still not very good.  The honey aftertaste is buggin' me.  This just isn't right."

Sip #3: "Ok, no more.  I'm done."

Is this why they're getting rid of the almond syrup?

C'mon now.

What's next?  Lemon Latte?  Taco Latte?

Shooting at NIU

Like everyone else, I am so shocked and saddened by last night's shootings at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL.  So far, seven fatalities have been reported - including the shooter. 

For those of you who don't know, NIU is about 30 miles west of Aurora.  There are a handful of students from The Orchard who attend the school, which makes this tragedy hit home for us in a unique way. 

Would you take a moment after reading this and join with me in praying for the students, faculty, and loved ones of those impacted?  It means a lot....  Thank you.

Valentine's Day (aka - A year's worth of dating my spouse shoved into one day)

I've got to be honest.  I don't really care much at all for Valentine's Day.  There's just something about expressing my love to someone via a Valentine's Day card or gift that feels fake, forced and flat out cheesy. 

And yes, I know...  That was kinda harsh.

But while I'm at it, I have to wonder how many of us men use Valentine's Day as a "make up" day for all the OTHER days throughout the year that we SHOULD have been romancing our wives and expressing our love in creative, fun ways to our children and loved ones.

As you can see, I have not yet had any coffee this morning. 

I think it's time.
